The composition of oily sludge is relatively complex, with an oil content of 10-50% and a water content of 40-90%. Sludge contains a large amount of crude oil, mechanical impurities, bacteria, as well as carcinogenic substances such as benzene derivatives, phenols, anthracene, castor, polychlorinated biphenyls, dioxins, radioactive nuclides, and toxic heavy metal elements such as arsenic, mercury, and chromium. A large amount of coagulants, corrosion inhibitors, scale inhibitors, fungicides and other chemicals are also added to the sewage treatment system.

Oily sludge has a huge volume, and if discharged directly without treatment, it not only occupies a large amount of land, but also causes serious pollution to surrounding soil, water bodies, air, vegetation and other environmental factors due to the infiltration and diffusion of crude oil that is not easily decomposed. The volatile organic compounds produced by the degradation of oily sludge can accumulate in the air, posing a threat to human health. The presence of oily sludge seriously exceeds the suspended solids content in the reinjection water, blocks the formation, reduces the water absorption capacity of the reservoir, continuously increases the water injection pressure, and reduces the effective period of the water well injection measures, increasing the treatment cost.
